I used to work as a sales for six years after college, from big IT company to Fortune 50 consumer brand. I have been through different titles, from an assistant, specialist, to business development. My career path and progress seemed fine, except for one thing — I don’t like my job.

However, I never treated this dislike seriously since there are so many excuses to ignore these noises, for instance, it’s already too late, life is always too busy, I don't have other experience or skills… Thus it’s easier for me to rationalize my dissonance to “It’s normal, most people don’t like their jobs”.

Until one day, I chatted with a guy who sat next to me on my flight to Seattle. At first, we were just chatting about the tourist spots in the city, then our conversation went personal. He asked me what I do in Taiwan. I never got enthusiastic about this question so I used as fewer word as possible to describe my job. However, when I asked him back, he turned super excited and passionate about sharing his work. I was so surprised and a bit embarrassed at that moment. I can’t help but wonder how great it would be if I have the same level of excitement while talking about my career.

This feeling kept haunting me for months so I began researching for a career shift. This process was actually harder and scarier than I thought because all the excuses dragging me back before were no-kidding real and harsh. It’s just so tempting to stay hesitating and postpone all the uncertainty, but it would only get harder and harder if I don’t turn “one day” to “day one”.

After my long exploration, I found digital marketing is an exciting field for me. I love stories through all kinds of media, statistic analytics, and I’m definitely addicted to social media. Then I evaluated my resource, including time and budget. The Digital Marketing Nanodegree on Udacity seems to fit the requirements that its flexibility allows me to take courses by my schedule but still provides the recommended timeline. The digital materials and tools introduced in the courses are up-to-date and useful. Also, almost every class is followed by a project which gives me more hands-on experience.

So now, I have been joining this program for three weeks. I’m pretty satisfied with the courses, materials, and progress that Udacity provides. I’m looking forward to more knowledge in digital marketing and anchoring my career in this fun and exciting fields.
